Today we look forward to one of our most read articles, talking about Xiaomi Redmi 4 and Xiaomi Redmi 5. Nowadays we have Redmi 6 and even 8, but it is worth finding out how much everything has changed in a year.
Sometimes it happens that we are happy with our mobile device even when we have more modern alternatives in the market, and we consider if it is useful to change or we should continue with the same device that makes us happy.
Other times we simply find that we can choose different versions in the market, especially when the new version has been launched recently, having the opportunity not only to choose the one we want, because not always the new is better, but rather we can also enjoy lower prices in the older version when the new one appears.
At first glance webserved how the Redmi 4 is smaller than the Redmi 5, making it easier to use it and keep it in your pocket, but a difference in size that should not make us choose one or the other as it is very similar, the Redmi 5 on the other hand is somewhat narrower, even for only 12 mm, but the fact of being bigger makes it heavier.
Unlike other models of the brand the device has a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The cameras are positioned in different places, on one side for the Redmi 4 and in the rear for the Redmi 5. But the way to use it is quite similar in both, not highlighting especially one over the other ..
At first glance it is observed how they are from the same family and there are no big differences between one and the other.
The two phones benefit from the update mode that MIUI incorporates, so they are up to date with software and both run similar operating systems, all at the beginning that Redmi 4 used an Android version of Marshmallow and Redmi 5 one of them. Nougat, but both will be ready to use both the newly launched MIUI 9.5 and the expected version with Oreo MIUI 10.
The Redmi 5 uses the chimp Snapdragon 450, while the Redmi 4 uses the Snapdragon 435.
According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 450 chip is 25% faster than the Snapdragon 435, but we must recognize that the difference is not obvious unless you compare them side by side.
The processor executes the applications with ease and you can play games that do not demand super high-end performances, both stand out for warming up a bit with intensive use, although the Redmi 5 is somewhat more than the Redmi 4.
The main difference that we see at a glance between the two is the screen, not the quality of it and the contrast and saturation, which are very similar, if not for the fact that the Redmi 5 offers extra 0.7 inches than without certainly make a difference for those who want to enjoy a larger screen or watch multimedia content
In these devices something curious happens, although the screen of the Redmi 5 is bigger, the fact of being narrower makes available a battery of smaller capacity, so in battery we can say that wins the Redmi 4, since it has a battery of greater capacity and on top it has to feed a smaller screen, so obviously, running the same Operating System, its duration is higher than that of the Redmi 5.
The Redmi 5 may have the largest screen, but the Redmi 4 has the largest battery. It is true that the size of the battery alone is not what determines the battery life, but in this case, Redmi 4 has an advantage over the Xiaomi Redmi 5.
Both are devices that you will need to charge at the end of the day, but in the case of the Xiaomi Redmi 4, at the end of the day you will have more available battery than in Redmi 5.
Here Xiaomi seems not to have been right in providing more screen and less battery, it seems illogical to compromise the life of the battery for a larger screen if the user can not disfigure the screen because the phone runs out of battery.
In the same way that in battery we can say that there is no doubt that the Xiaomi Redmi 4 wins, in the camera loses. It is usually logical that the most modern devices incorporate better cameras, both for improvements in hardware and software.
A simple eye would not notice large differences if you do not compare side by side to see the photos, there are no big differences in terms of megapixels but the camera of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 allows an automatic focus (AF) faster than the Redmi 4, capturing better movement with better image quality, since it can manage exposure more efficiently. Even with natural light, the Redmi 5 reproduces colors and details much better than the Redmi Four.
Since both cameras have a 5MP lens on the front, the images should ideally be identical. But, it seems as if Xiaomi had updated the further processing of their camera application for the Redmi 5, so that the exposure of the selfie shots will increase.
I’m not sure if the discrepancies are enough to make me change the phone, but if I was buying a new phone and choosing between the two Xiaomi devices, the Redmi 5 would be ahead of the Redmi 4, but the differences are not so wide as to rule out one for the other, it will basically depend if you want a bigger screen and better camera or a better battery to choose from.
Suppose the case that you already had Redmi 4 and what you are considering is to change Redmi 5, you should consider in that case that the quality of the camera and the size of the screen are the only reasons to consider changing the Redmi 5 , but if these aspects are not key for you, we recommend that you continue with Redmi 4 for a while.
The Redmi 5 is a good choice in the entry-level segment if you do not mind the size, since for some it can be big. But, the Redmi 4 is a smaller phone that has the same power, as we said the difference between Snapdragon chips is 25% on paper but hardly noticeable. The battery life of the Redmi 4 also adds to its appeal if it is always on the move.
The Redmi 5 wins with better features on paper, as it should be, since it is the ‘update’ of the Redmi 4. But, taking into account that the Redmi 4 has a longer battery life and the Xiaomi updates are slow to arrive around , it seems that it is the best option, all things considered.
In short, for tastes the colors and depend on whether you want a better screen-camera or a battery with longer duration, but both phones are recommended.
